Frog '13: Celebrating Outstanding Education

On June 18, Frogtrade held its annual conference, Frog '13, at the ICC in Birminghim, themed "Celebrating Outstanding Education".

The conference, which was open to senior leaders, school teachers and ICT co-ordinators from schools across the UK using Frog, provided attendees with fresh insights into how technology is revolutionising teaching and learning and how Frog products are constantly being enhanced to keep up with the latest trends.

Frog '13 saw the exciting launch of the new cloud-based FrogOS, which is a giant leap forward for UK schools, many of which have been and are still operating on server-based Frog platforms. Similar to the Frog VLE that is enjoyed by Malaysian schools, FrogOS was built with mobility in mind using the latest web technology, and works across all mobile and tablet devices. The sleek-looking FrogOS drew oohs and ahhs from the crowd of educators as Frog Managing Director Gareth Davies demonstrated the new features during his opening address.

Watch Frog Managing Director Gareth Davies showcase the new features in FrogOS.

The conference also brought together visionary leaders from across the education sector, including Lord Sutherland of Houndwood (Chairman of Frogtrade and YTL Education), Mark Chambers (CEO of Naace, the UK's association for the use of ICT in education), and FrogAsia's very own Elizabeth Lopez (Head of Transformation Management), to discuss the future of learning and technology.

Watch  FrogAsia's Head of Transformation Elizabeth Lopez talk about the ground-breaking milestones that FrogAsia has achieved in Malaysian schools.

Elizabeth Lopez explaining the scope of the 1BestariNet project to the crowd of over 900 attendees.

In addition, attendees had the opportunity to get up close with the latest education technology through demo stations located throughout the conference venue, while participating in interactive workshops and panel discussions held throughout the day, including workshops run by Frog partners such as Encyclopaedia Britannica, Microsoft, I Am Learning, and more. The workshops and panel discussions addressed topics ranging from how to use smart devices as a teaching resource to working with parents to raise attainment.

Demo booths were located throughout the conference venue for participants to get a hands-on experience with the latest technology.

Participants took home colourful Frog bags filled with lots of Frog goodies!

Mandarin Teacher uses Frog to Make Education Relevant and Fun

"Why do we have to learn this?" This is a common question that teachers and parents sometimes hear from students. However SMK Puchong's Mandarin Teacher, Mrs. Guek, is all set to let students know that what they are learning is indeed relevant to their lives by linking what she teaches in the classroom to everyday life.

Ms. Guek also acknowledges the benefits of gamification in education in increasing the fun in learning. She successfully encourages her students' participation in learning by allowing the use of game-thinking  to build their Mandarin vocabulary.

She does all this through the Frog VLE, and dramatically improve her students' understanding of the language, especially in essay writing. Listen to her story in her own words today!

We are inspired by your dedication to enhance your students' learning experience, Ms. Guek! We love hearing stories like this and we look forward to discovering more innovative teachers like Ms. Guek from schools all over Malaysia!
If you're a teacher with a great Frog Story to tell, we'd love to share it with everyone too! Just login to your Frog VLE and share your story with us on the Frog Community Site!

The Lab is also powered by Yes 4G mobile Internet. We're really excited because the future of education is happening now, and we're part of it!

The ceremony began with a spectacular 24 Season Drum Performance by the students of SJK(C) Choong Wen which was really impressive. It got everyone excited for the next thing on the agenda. Everyone was excited and eager to see just how launching of this Chrome Lab and its Yes 4G Chromebooks would impact the education experience in a school like this.

VIPs and guests were treated to a personal tour of the Chrome Lab by SJK(C) Choong Wen's enthusiastic Frog Champion Students who conducted the tour excellently. They gave everyone an impressive demonstration of how the Frog VLE is used on their Chromebooks. We were really encouraged to see how these students have truly taken ownership of the Frog VLE at their school and how they understand what it means to bring education to the next level with technology today.

SK Putrajaya Presint 8(1)'s Headteacher in full support of Frog!

Buzz about the Frog VLE is quickly growing as many teachers and students across the nation are beginning to get the hang of it and are discovering the value it adds to their education experience.

At SK Putrajaya Presint 8(1), the rate of teachers and students logging into Frog is drastically increasing. When we went to the school to find out more about how they are using Frog, we found that Mathematics, Bahasa Malaysia, Science and Kemahiran Hidup teachers are already conducting classes using the Frog VLE at least once a week! Their students have found these lessons really exciting and are now familiar with using Frog for classroom learning and for doing homework.

SMKA Sultan Azlan Shah is a step ahead with Frog!

SMKA Sultan Azlan Shah is a Champion School in Ipoh, Perak that had not yet received training from our FrogAsia team. When the team arrived, we found that they had already taken the initiative to complete the first stage of the Transformation Checklist independently. In addition, they had also taught their fellow colleagues how to use the platform.

Watch this video to find out how they did it, as told by Frog Admins, Puan Nurul Azrina and Cik Tom.

We're really encouraged by teachers like Puan Nurul Azrina and Cik Tom. They make a difference in Malaysian education by going the extra mile for their students. We look forward to more inspiring stories like these with Frog.

SMK Tanjung Sepat and SMK Assunta collaborate on their Frog journey

We were recently invited to an "Introduction to Frog" session held at SMK Assunta. The session was organised by SMK Tanjung Sepat so that the school could learn about best practices from a more experienced school, SMK Assunta. SMK Tanjung Sepat had taken the initiative to reach out to fellow teachers from a different school in order to further understand the VLE journey and how to better use it for teaching and learning.

Watch this video for snippets of the session.

We are truly encouraged by the effort taken by these schools to set differences aside, collaborate and help each other along their Frog journey. This is truly what the future of education looks like: nationwide collaboration and schools sharing best practices to improve the quality of education.

SMPK Setapak Uses Frog for the Visually Impaired: Part 2 of 2

In our recent post, we introduced SMPK Setapak, a school for the visually impaired. As we found out, in 2012, two teachers who had attended a Frog Admin training held by the Ministry of Education (Bahagian Teknologi Pendidikan) took the initiative to implement Frog in their school without any additional guidance.

When we heard the news, we headed over for a visit to find out how a school like theirs used Frog and what motivated them to do so. Watch this second video to find out how the school's Frog Admin, Ms Tang Lai Shin, explores the use of the Frog VLE for her students.

The teachers at SMPK Setapak have found ways to incorporate Frog into their teaching and learning experience despite the many challenges that come with teaching students who have special needs.

Their story is an inspiring example of how anything is possible if you want to make it happen.

We commend SMPK Setapak for their positive attitude not just towards implementing a new way of teaching and learning in their school, but for taking up the challenge to ensure that no matter what level of ability, their students get the best from what education technology can offer.

If you've got a great story to tell, we'd love to share it with everyone too! Just hop on to our Facebook page and let us know you have a Frog Story to tell, and we'll be in touch.

SMPK Setapak Uses Frog for the Visually Impaired: Part 1 of 2

Sekolah Menengah Pendidikan Khas Setapak is a school for the visually impaired. Among the 140 students that are currently enrolled in the school, the range of visual impairment ranges from partial to full blindness. SMPK Setapak's school staff consists of teachers who are both fully sighted as well as those who have varying degrees of visual impairment.

In 2012, two teachers who had attended a Frog Admin training held by the Ministry of Education (Bahagian Teknologi Pendidikan), took the initiative to implement Frog in their school even without having any further guidance as they are not listed as a Frog Champion School.

When we heard the news, we headed over for a visit to find out how a school like theirs used Frog and what motivated them to do so. Watch this video to find out more about this school as told by the School Principal, Encik Jalaluddin Yusof.

We are very encouraged just by how much effort these teachers put into giving the best education to their students who have special needs,  on a daily basis. Stay tuned to find out how they use the Frog VLE for teaching and learning purposes in the follow-up story next week!

Hoppin' Tunes: "The Making Of" with Rebecca Fernandez

Have you seen the first Hoppin' Tunes video that was produced by our awesome FrogAsia interns, called "Never Going Back to Textbooks"? It's brilliant! Get to know the creative geniuses behind this catchy production and find out how they managed to pull off this project as a team.

Meet Rebecca Fernandez, an intern with great leadership qualities and lots of personality.

How did you choose the song for this video?
The song had a really catchy tune and everybody just loved hearing it. It was also easy to change the lyrics of this particular song.

Explain the lyrics and why they were chosen for the song?
We were told that we had to talk about the features on the Frog VLE. So we just started brainstorming. We also included lyrics that talked about what students typically go through on a daily basis such as trying to fit in too many books into their school bags, but now with the Frog VLE, we never have to struggle again.

What was the process in making this video?
It was a really fun and interesting process! We sat down together and started thinking about how we could make it fun. We tackled one verse at a time, and after each verse was done we would film it, so that we wouldn't lose the idea. Then it came to the video editing part which Jason did. I recorded the song for the video. Rachel and Chrislynn were in most parts of the video so they're the 'stars' of the video.

Is there anything you discovered about yourself during the process of making this video with your team?
I realized that I could do so many things, like how I never knew how to use a recording programme to record a song before this, but when the time came I could do it. Unspoken gifts you can say. I think every member of our team realized the we had a hidden talent, and we got to use it. Also our group dynamics were so good, we got along really well. Teamwork is the key!

If you had the chance again, would you enjoy working on a fun project that requires creative thinking like this one?
Of course! This project was so fun! I learned so much and was able to exercise the creative side of my brain. I just loved every bit of this project.

To know more about what Rebecca was talking about, watch their video below!

We want to showcase your creative ideas in your Hoppin' Tunes video too! Hop on into The Pond to find out how to FrogBomb the lyrics of your favourite song and stand a chance to win great prizes just by participating in the Hoppin' Tunes Competition

SMK Convent Bukit Nanas Initiates Class and Co-curricular Site Competition

To help students along their Frog journey, SMK Convent Bukit Nanas initiated an ongoing internal Site Making Competition that is being held from February to end April 2013. This competition is for the Best Class Site and Best Co-curricular Site on the Frog VLE. The competition helped to encourage students to get excited about using the Frog VLE to create excellent Class Sites and Co-curricular Sites which are visually creative and also informative.

Thanks to the initiative shown by the Assistant Headteacher (Academic), Puan Chee, and the Assistant Headteacher (Co-curriculum), Puan Norbani, who organised the competition, every class in SMK Convent Bukit Nanas now has a Class Site and upcoming Co-curricular Sites that the students are actively using!

We stopped by for a visit and caught up with two of the students who have created what are now the leading Sites in the competition. Watch the video below to see what Jaiyaswiny Sivakumar and Georgina Shobah James shared with us about how they came up with original ideas to make these Sites, and what they learned in the process!

We love partnering with schools like SMK Convent Bukit Nanas and many others who share this vision for bringing education in Malaysia to the next level.

Well done SMK Convent Bukit Nanas! We're looking forward to seeing the final outcome of this competition end April. May the best Sites win!

History teachers collaborate on Frog to share lesson resources nationwide

For the academic year 2013, the Ministry of Education (MOE) added History to the list of compulsory subjects for Form Four and Form Five students. The Curriculum Unit (Bahagian Pembangunan Kurikulum) under the MOE invited History Subject Specialist teachers (Guru Cemerlang Sejarah), including History textbook authors, for a workshop on using the Frog VLE to enhance teaching through collaborating and sharing of content nationwide.

During the three-day workshop, participants created Frog Lesson Sites for the Form Four and Form Five syllabus and sent them to the MOE repository for approval and publication. These Sites will soon be available on the FrogStore, accessible by History teachers from all over Malaysia through the Frog VLE.

Additionally, a group called eKIS (Komuniti Ilmu Sejarah) was created by the History Subject Specialist teachers for History teachers nationwide to network and communicate, in order to continually improve the quality and standard of teaching for the subject.

Watch the video below to hear the Guru Cemerlang Sejarah share their thoughts on the Frog VLE:

Team Thoughts: Why I Love the Frog VLE.

What is the Frog VLE? And why should you care? While we could point you to our website, we’d much rather tell you in our own words why we think Frog is amazing.

We asked FrogAsia's Platform Advisor, Adam Chua, what his favorite thing about the Frog VLE was. Here's what he has to say:

Adam, Alumni of SMK Batu Lapan, Puchong Jaya

"My favorite thing about the Frog VLE is the Frog VLE itself! I’m intrigued by the idea that you can go beyond the classroom and textbooks. The knowledge you gain from textbooks is limited, but with the Frog VLE, you can draw in content from anywhere on the Internet! Your typical school syllabus can be enhanced by current and exciting content found on the World Wide Web.

Also the drag and drop widgets make it easy and simple for anyone to use when building a website. This means you don’t have to know coding and other complicated techy stuff in order to build your very own website.

The Frog VLE itself is exclusive to individual schools making it easy for students, teachers, and parents within the school to share stuff with each other without public view. If teachers from different schools want to communicate with one another, they can do it through the interest group forums within the Frog Community Site."
