SJK(C) Choong Wen launches Malaysia's very first Chrome Lab

Yes 4G together with Eduspec, launched Malaysia’s very first Chrome Lab at SJK(C) Choong Wen yesterday!

The Chrome Lab, jointly built by the school's Parent Teacher’s Association (Persatuan Ibubapa dan Guru or PIBG) as well as the School Board, had been furnished by EduSpec and is fully equipped with Yes 4G Chromebook units and a Chrome Cart, donated by YTL Communications Sdn Bhd (YTL Comms). The Lab is also powered by Yes 4G mobile Internet. We're really excited because the future of education is happening now, and we're part of it!

The ceremony began with a spectacular 24 Season Drum Performance by the students of SJK(C) Choong Wen which was really impressive. It got everyone excited for the next thing on the agenda. Dr. Wee Ka Siong.

Students who were dressed in attractive green Frog suits performed a dance that had a Chromebook descending from the ceiling of the stage as a firework display lit the entire scene, symbolising the dawn of a new era for education in Malaysian schools. Everyone was excited and eager to see just how launching of this Chrome Lab and its Yes 4G Chromebooks would impact the education experience in a school like this.

VIPs and guests were treated to a personal tour of the Chrome Lab by SJK(C) Choong Wen's enthusiastic Frog Champion Students who conducted the tour excellently. They gave everyone an impressive demonstration of how the Frog VLE is used on their Chromebooks. We were really encouraged to see how these students have truly taken ownership of the Frog VLE at their school and how they understand what it means to bring education to the next level with technology today.

Looking Forward to Meeting Teachers!

What is FrogAsia all about? And why should you care? While we could point you to our website, we’d rather tell you in our own words so you can get to know us just a little more.

We asked FrogAsia's Implementation Consultant, Usha Sundarajoo, what are the three things she looks forward to on school visits. Here's what she has to say:

Usha, Alumni of SMK Convent Butterworth

“I look forward to seeing all my teachers again after last meeting them during training last year in October 2012. I don't get to see them as often as I'd like to.

I also look forward to seeing the progress that schools have achieved after using the Frog VLE.

Finally, I look forward to seeing the looks on their faces when they're excited about the Frog VLE!

SK Putrajaya Presint 8(1)'s Headteacher in full support of Frog!

Buzz about the Frog VLE is quickly growing as many teachers and students across the nation are beginning to get the hang of it and are discovering the value it adds to their education experience.

At SK Putrajaya Presint 8(1), the rate of teachers and students logging into Frog is drastically increasing. When we went to the school to find out more about how they are using Frog, we found that Mathematics, Bahasa Malaysia, Science and Kemahiran Hidup teachers are already conducting classes using the Frog VLE at least once a week! Their students have found these lessons really exciting and are now familiar with using Frog for classroom learning and for doing homework.

The Headteacher of SK Putrajaya Presint 8(1), Puan Rohayati binti Mansor is a huge supporter of Frog, and  together with her leadership team, they have great plans to fully integrate Frog into their school experience.

Watch this video to hear why she thinks education technology such as the Frog VLE really helps teachers in school for administration, teaching and learning, and communication.

We love your enthusiasm, Puan Rohayati! Your school is indeed a Frog Champion School and we can't wait to see what amazing things the teachers in this school will do with Frog. Keep up the great work!

The Frog Transformation Programme is designed to guide teachers and students along their Frog journey in a simple, fun, and engaging manner. It runs over a 40-week period where FrogAsia's Tranformation Team trains and guides Frog Champion Schools in fully implementing the Frog VLE into their education experience through each step of the Transformation Checklist.

This April, Frog Champion Schools will be entering the second phase of the Transformation Programme, known as the Empower Phase, where teachers will start using the Frog VLE to create Teaching and Learning Sites, and where Frog Champion students will train their fellow schoolmates on how to use Frog!

Check out a sneak peek of the guides below. Aren't they pretty?

The best part? The Transformation Programme is for everyone! You can hop on board and use these guides to take Frog to greater heights in your school too! These simple and easy-to-use teacher and student guides are available on The Pond and the Community Site for any school to use.

SMK Kiaramas holds a Frog Buzz Week

As part of the Transformation Programme, schools are required to organise a Frog Awareness event on a day where Frog Admins can introduce the Frog VLE to their whole school. SMK Kiaramas went the extra mile by organising a Frog Buzz week that included an Online Cyber Hunt which encouraged the students to log into the Frog VLE.

Thanks to the initiative taken by the Frog Admins of SMK Kiaramas, the school is well on their way to using Frog effectively. Well done, SMK Kiaramas!

SMKA Sultan Azlan Shah is a step ahead with Frog!

SMKA Sultan Azlan Shah is a Champion School in Ipoh, Perak that had not yet received training from our FrogAsia team. When the team arrived, we found that they had already taken the initiative to complete the first stage of the Transformation Checklist independently. In addition, they had also taught their fellow colleagues how to use the platform.

Watch this video to find out how they did it, as told by Frog Admins, Puan Nurul Azrina and Cik Tom.

We're really encouraged by teachers like Puan Nurul Azrina and Cik Tom. They make a difference in Malaysian education by going the extra mile for their students. We look forward to more inspiring stories like these with Frog.

If you've got a great story to tell, we'd love to share it with everyone too! Just hop on to our Facebook page and let us know you have a Frog Story to tell, and we'll be in touch.

Best High School Memories Learning Science!

What is FrogAsia all about? And why should you care? While we could point you to our website, we’d rather tell you in our own words so you can get to know us just a little more.

We asked FrogAsia's Community Site Manager, Arafeh Karimi, about one of her best high school memories. Here's what she has to say:

Arafeh, Alumni of Saberin High School, Iran

“One of my best memories in high school is my Chemistry Lab
class. Our final project was coming up with a new invention using laws of Science.

At the end, we invented a new device to produce oxygen for
Submarines and won several science award. I miss late night work.”

SMK Tanjung Sepat and SMK Assunta collaborate on their Frog journey

We were recently invited to an "Introduction to Frog" session held at SMK Assunta. The session was organised by SMK Tanjung Sepat so that the school could learn about best practices from a more experienced school, SMK Assunta. SMK Tanjung Sepat had taken the initiative to reach out to fellow teachers from a different school in order to further understand the VLE journey and how to better use it for teaching and learning.

Watch this video for snippets of the session.

We are truly encouraged by the effort taken by these schools to set differences aside, collaborate and help each other along their Frog journey. This is truly what the future of education looks like: nationwide collaboration and schools sharing best practices to improve the quality of education.

What do parents love about the Frog VLE?

Since last year, Frog has been rolled-out to schools all around the country. Besides teachers and students, parents are also given their access to Frog through their 1BestariNet Yes IDs. By logging in with their IDs, parents are able to check up on their children through the Parent Noticeboard where they can receive notices from the schools and be updated on the latest happenings.

While we can tell you what Frog does for parents, we'd rather let the parents speak for themselves. Watch the video to see what parents are saying about Frog!

This is only the beginning to a transformation in education. There's so much more in store for you when educators, learners and parents nationwide finally connect through a single learning platform. If you are a parent and have yet to retrieve your ID, click here to retrieve it and explore Frog for yourself!

Women’s History Month: Madam Emily Hong Yin Wah

In conjunction with Women’s History Month, we’re featuring women who have made a significant difference in the world of education.

Madam Emily Hong was born in Kluang, Johor and has been in the education line for 33 years. Her first experience in teaching started when she was in Form 6, tutoring a student from a Chinese private school. She felt a sense of fulfillment from enabling someone to understand what he needed to know.

When asked about what motivated her to pursue education, Madam Emily recalled her days as a student and two of her favourite teachers.

“I was motivated by two teachers. One of them is a very pretty young English Primary school teacher. I enjoyed her lessons and I looked forward to the drama we have to put up every year. Another teacher who inspired me was my Geography teacher. His lessons were never boring, there were lots of laughter and we all looked forward to him coming to class. Not only that, he was a friend to all of us.”

“When I started to think about my career, I thought, “Why not teaching?” I applied for a teaching scholarship from the state, got the scholarship and graduated with a BSc in Biology from University Malaya.”

In year 2000, Madam Emily became a Principal in SMK Puchong which was where she found a team of hardworking and committed teachers to work with. Together with the team, she managed to see the results in the school improve, win district level competitions and a decrease in discipline problems during her time there. Madam Emily helped turned the school from a run-down school with disciplinary problems and a high truancy rate to a school which won the district- and state-level in “Kebersihan, Kesihatan dan Keselamatan (3K)”* competitions, as well as in athletics and co-curricular activities.

*Translated from Bahasa Malaysia: Cleanliness, Safety, and Conducive environment

“I love the school despite the challenges for I believe every child is an asset.”

Later when she moved on to being Principal of SMK Assunta, Madam Emily helped the school raise RM 1.2 million to build a modern Art Centre, together with the help of teachers, the school board, the PIBG (Persatuan Ibubapa-Guru / Parent-Teacher Association), and Assunta alumni Datin Kathleen Yeoh. This art center was used to conduct the school’s enrichment programmes including art, music, literature, co-curricular and cultural activities.

Today, Madam Emily’s is a woman who is passionate about sharing her ideas and experiences with the FrogAsia team to enable and inspire teachers and school heads to be 21st century educators. She believes that good educators can inspire students to be self-motivated, creative and prepared for their roles in the future.

“I would give the thumbs up for any woman who wants to pursue a career in education because I strongly believe education helps build a person, the family, the community and the nation. Teachers shape the future because they educate the leaders of tomorrow. It is a noble profession.”

The energetic woman concluded with advice from a quote by Lola May, "There are three things to remember when teaching: know your stuff; know whom you are stuffing; and then stuff them elegantly."

SMPK Setapak Uses Frog for the Visually Impaired: Part 2 of 2

In our recent post, we introduced SMPK Setapak, a school for the visually impaired. As we found out, in 2012, two teachers who had attended a Frog Admin training held by the Ministry of Education (Bahagian Teknologi Pendidikan) took the initiative to implement Frog in their school without any additional guidance.

When we heard the news, we headed over for a visit to find out how a school like theirs used Frog and what motivated them to do so. Watch this second video to find out how the school's Frog Admin, Ms Tang Lai Shin, explores the use of the Frog VLE for her students.

The teachers at SMPK Setapak have found ways to incorporate Frog into their teaching and learning experience despite the many challenges that come with teaching students who have special needs.

Their story is an inspiring example of how anything is possible if you want to make it happen.

We commend SMPK Setapak for their positive attitude not just towards implementing a new way of teaching and learning in their school, but for taking up the challenge to ensure that no matter what level of ability, their students get the best from what education technology can offer.

If you've got a great story to tell, we'd love to share it with everyone too! Just hop on to our Facebook page and let us know you have a Frog Story to tell, and we'll be in touch.

SJK(C) Sentul takes initiative with Frog!

In March 2013, SJK(C) Sentul took the initiative to organise their own official Frog VLE training for 28 enthusiastic Frog Admins and teachers.

The training session was split into two days. Day 1 started with the introduction of the Frog VLE and the 1BestariNet project. The Frog Admins then learned how to create their School Dashboard, use the Booking Calendar, manage users and create Departmental Sites. The following day, teachers learned how to create Sites, copy Sites from the FrogStore, edit them, create assignments and share them. By the end of the day, teachers created their own five-page mock Site furnished with information and content found on Pin-Point and the FrogStore.

We are always proud to hear of schools that have taken the initiative to organise Frog training sessions and workshops on their own, and we look forward to opportunities to work more closely with schools all over the country.

If you've got a great story to tell, we'd love to share it with everyone too! Just hop on to our Facebook page and let us know you have a Frog Story to tell, and we'll be in touch.
