750 teachers, parents and educators inspired at the Leaps of Knowledge Conference themed "The Future of Learning" yesterday

FrogAsia held our very first Leaps Of Knowledge Conference for 750 parents and teachers at JW Marriott, Kuala Lumpur just yesterday!

In line with the conference theme, “The Future Of Learning”, internationally renowned thought-leaders in the field of leadership and education technology such as 2013 TED Prize Winner Sugata Mitra, author of Barefoot Leadership Alvin Ung and Vice President of Intel APAC and Japan Gregory Bryant shared their thoughts on how education can be transformed for the better with the help of technology and the Internet during this one-day conference.

The opening ceremony involved an exciting video screening of FrogAsia’s proudest achievements since the company first began two years ago. FrogAsia’s Executive Director Lou Yeoh’s welcome address set a tone of anticipation for the day, followed by an opening speech from Deputy Education Minister II YB P. Kamalanathan.

In his inspirational and entertaining talk, Alvin Ung shared his experiences at SK Lemoi, a school in the rural jungles of Pahang that became the most improved school in Malaysia. He shared the stage with his niece, Hannah Khaw who spoke about how Penan village students of the Orang Asli showed remarkable improvement in their mathematics when it was made relevant by playing a localised version of Monopoly over the school holidays. Meanwhile, Gregory Bryant enlightened the audience with the learning possibilities available through technological devices such as Google’s Chromebook.

Giving the audience an overview of the 13-year research that precipitated his $1 million dollar TED-Prize-winning wish to build a “School in the Cloud”, Professor Sugata Mitra highlighted the importance of the Internet and how it brings empowerment to its users.

“There is no better time to introduce Malaysia to Professor Mitra’s ideas. His ‘School in the Cloud’ vision aligns with our efforts at FrogAsia. By bringing the Frog Experience to all national schools, Mitra’s vision is taking shape here and now, and the schools we’ve showcased throughout the conference today is a testament of this,” said FrogAsia’s Executive Director, Lou Yeoh as she introduced Sugata Mitra to the audience.

The afternoon session had a panel dialogue with five key leaders in the field of education, CEO of Pemandu YB Senator Dato’ Sri Idris Jala, President of the Malaysian English Language Teaching Association (MELTA) Dr. Ganakumaran Subramaniam, former Vice-Chancellor of Edinburgh University Lord Stewart Sutherland, and Professor Sugata Mitra himself.

Facilitated by Alvin Ung, the discussion covered intriguing topics such as the speakers’ own educational experiences and of the roles that parents, teachers and opinion leaders each play in partnering together to effectively equip our children for the future.

During the conference, four Champion Schools were also recognised for showing significant progress under the Ministry of Education’s 1BestariNet initiative. They were SMK Kiaramas, SMK Sains Teluk Intan, SMK Dato Sri Amar di Raja, SMK Convent Bukit Nanas. These schools were awarded FrogStore vouchers worth up to RM10,000.

The conference also included eight workshops that focused on empowering educators and parents to maximise the potential of a digitally-driven generation. Participants were given the chance to meet our educational content partners at the FrogStore Zone and had the opportunity to see what a classroom of the future would encapsulate at the Hop In Zone. Students from various Champion Schools showed participants how they have already been using the Frog VLE and the Google Chromebook in their classrooms and at home too.

The Future of Learning Conference - Up Close and Personal with Sugata Mitra

FrogAsia brings you the latest instalment in the Leaps of Knowledge series with The Future of Learning Conference, happening on the 5th of December at the JW Marriott Hotel, Kuala Lumpur and featuring some of the most innovative minds and thought leaders in the world today.

Read our exclusive interview with conference keynote speaker, Professor Sugata Mitra, to find out what the future of learning means to him and what technology means for education!

1. Why are you excited to be at this conference?
SM: This conference brings together people from all over the world. Kuala Lumpur is a special memory for me. It is here that I first presented the results of the original 'hole in the wall' experiments, in the year 2000.

2. What does the future of learning mean to you?
SM: Because of the Internet, learners can take charge of their own learning. This will profoundly change schooling as we know it.

3. How do you think technology can effectively prepare students for the future?
SM: Technology does not do anything. It is people who have to use technology. In the hands of learners, information technology can profoundly change the way learning happens.

Mitra is a professor of educational technology at Newcastle University and Chief Scientist Emeritus of the National Institute of Information Technology, Mitra, is known for his 1999 “Hole-in-the-Wall” experiment which proved children could learn to use computers without formal training.

Leaps of Knowledge: The Future of Learning Conference

In August, we brought Nick Vujicic to Kuala Lumpur under the first ever Leaps of Knowledge event. The series continues with a full-day conference themed "The Future of Learning", happening on the 5th of December at the JW Marriott Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

This is your chance to listen to and be inspired by internationally-renowned thought leaders in education such as Professor Sugata Mitra, professor of educational technology at Newcastle University and Chief Scientist of the National Institute of Information Technology (NIIT).

Professor Sugata Mitra’s 1999 “Hole in the Wall” experiment proved that children could learn how to use computers without formal training. That experiment has since been repeated at many places and acclaimed in literacy and education studies around the globe, inspiring other educators as well as the Oscar-winning movie “Slumdog Millionaire”.

Other speakers include author, facilitator and leadership coach Alvin Ung and Intel APAC and Japan Vice President Gregory Bryant.

From Sugata Mitra's findings on how children can self-organise and achieve their learning objectives with minimal supervision, to Alvin Ung's inspiring experiences in a Malaysian school in the jungles of Pahang that became this year’s most improved school in the country, and finally to Gregory Bryant's insights into the learning possibilities now available with the advent of technology, the keynote talks are aimed to inspire and spark new perspectives for teaching and learning.

Conference speakers will also join three prominent personalities in education and government in a panel dialogue, during which participants will be able to pose their questions to the panel for discussion.

Guests on the panel are:

  • Lord Stewart Sutherland, who previously held the positions of Vice-Chancellor of Edinburgh University, Vice-Chancellor of the University of London, Principal of King’s College London and Chief Inspector of Schools in the UK
  • Dato Seri Idris Jala, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and CEO of PEMANDU
  • Dr. Ganakumaran Subramaniam, Head of Faculty of Arts and Education at University of Nottingham (Malaysia Campus), and President of the Malaysian English Language Teaching Association (MELTA)

The full-day conference will include workshops aimed to equip and empower educators and parents to prepare the students of today for a digitally-driven future, and exhibition booths which will enable participants to experience the future of learning for themselves.

Seats are limited, so don't miss out! Register for as low as RM50 before 16th November 2013 while the 50% Early Bird discount applies! Conference fees include lunch and tea breaks at the JW Marriott Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

Girl Rising: Kuala Lumpur

This month, FrogAsia is proud to present Girl Rising: Kuala Lumpur a screening of the internationally acclaimed documentary film, Girl Rising, that champions girls’ right to education. This event will be held on the 25th of October 2013, in support of the International Day of the Girl Child

The Girl Rising film highlights the stories of nine young girls born into unforgiving circumstances. These girls are each unique, but the obstacles they faced are ubiquitous. The film echoes the hopes of 66 million girls around the world who dream of going to school and want, more than anything, to learn. Girl Rising is a movement that is dedicated to empowering and achieving educational equity for girls around the world.

At FrogAsia, we are aligned with Girl Rising in the belief that education is the right of all students, regardless of their gender or cultural background and that the gap between urban and rural schools must be bridged with access to quality education.

With that in mind, we tailored this screening for an audience of 400 Girl Guides from various schools around Kuala Lumpur. The day will include a screening of the film and fun activities that aim to challenge and inspire the students to take action and make small steps towards making a difference within their own school or community.

This event is invite-only, but you can stand a chance to win two tickets for you and a friend by joining our Girl Rising: Kuala Lumpur Facebook contest. All you have to do is submit a pledge on The Pond by completing this sentence:

"As a girl, I believe I can make a difference in my generation. I pledge to…"

Find out more more about Girl Rising: Kuala Lumpur here and spread the movement by holding a screening of the free chapter of the film at your own Girl Rising event.

Leaps of Knowledge: An Evening with Nick Vujicic

Over 1,700 parents, teachers and students were given the special opportunity to hear world-renowned inspirational speaker Nick Vujicic in person at Leaps of Knowledge: An Evening with Nick Vujicic, the first in a series of talks, seminars, workshops and conferences designed to inspire and enlighten Malaysians, presented by FrogAsia and sponsored by the YTL Foundation.

Special guests of honor for the evening included Deputy Education Minister En P. Kamalanathan, FrogAsia Executive Director Yeoh Pei Lou, YTL Group Executive Director Dato’ Yeoh Seok Hong, YTL Group Executive Director Dato’ Yeoh Soo Keng and YTL Group Legal Counsel Datin Kathleen Chew.

Nick Vujicic sharing a light moment with Deputy Education Minister En P. Kamalanathan and YTL Group Executive Director Dato' Yeoh Seok Hong before his talk.

Despite having to battle Friday evening jams and a heavy downpour, attendees turned up as early as two hours before the event was scheduled to begin in anticipation to hear Nick speak.

Deputy Education Minister En P. Kamalanathan sharing his thoughts on education

The evening kicked off with opening speeches by Yeoh Pei Lou, Executive Director of FrogAsia, and En. P Kamalanathan, Deputy Education Minister of Malaysia, followed by special presentations by Wing K Lee, YTL Communications’ CEO, who talked about YTL’s vision for venturing into educational technology as a means to bridge the digital divide and equip schools for the future, and Elizabeth Lopez, FrogAsia’s Head of Transformation, who shared stories of how three schools from different states in Malaysia used technology to effectively address challenges they were facing.

YTL Communications CEO, Wing K Lee, explaining the Bestari Experience that FrogAsia and YTL Communications is providing to over 10,000 nationwide under the 1BestariNet project

Next came the moment the audience had been waiting eagerly for, when Nick Vujicic was ushered onstage. In his trademark down-to-earth style, he moved the audience from laughter to tears and back again, pacing up and down the table energetically as he tackled topics ranging from bullying, to the power of positivity and encouragement, to dealing with the challenges of life.

During his talk, Nick emphasised the importance of believing in one’s self-worth in order to overcome obstacles. Speaking to the parents, he challenged them to provide their children with plenty of love as a foundation upon which their self-esteem can be built.

Nick had the audience smiling, clapping, laughing and even tearing up at points throughout his talk

Displaying his insight into Malaysian culture, he remarked, “I know Asian parents believe in discipline, but as parents, we need to tell our kids “I love you” more. For me, it is not enough to just provide for my family, I need to be there for them."

"No matter how rich you are, if you don’t have love in your home and family, you are poor.”

He credits his parents’ love and support as key factors in overcoming his childhood depression and going on to live a successful life despite his disabilities.

To the teachers in the audience, Nick encouraged them to see their job as similar to that of a farmer.

“You’ve been given this bucket of seeds to sow, and for many years, it is just about sowing, cultivating and nurturing. But from one tiny seed can grow enormous trees.”

One of the most moving moments of the evening was when the three winners of the “Ask Nick a Question Facebook contest” joined Nick onstage to ask him a question, give him a hug and take a picture with him.

The first winner, 8-year old Shrrii Shivanie, asked Nick, “What advice would you pass on to your son when he grows up?” Nick replied, “The first thing I would tell him is that me and my wife love him very much, and the second thing is that I will always support him and believe in no matter what.”

Educator Lim Chiew Yang giving Nick a hug after asking him her question.

The second question by educator Lim Chiew Yang was: “How can I empower the special needs students in my school to feel like they can be more than what they think they can be? What can I do as a teacher to unleash their potential?”

Nick stressed the importance of believing in them and giving them opportunities to learn about other people who have faced challenges and overcome them. He shared the story of how his turning point came when he heard about Philip Toth, who was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease, a neuro-degenerative illness. Philip Toth’s positive attitude to his crippling condition serves as a strong inspiration to Nick Vujicic even after he passed away.

Watie Aziz, a parent, asking Nick her question.

The final question for the night came from parent Watie Aziz: “I have a daughter age 3 years with a Symbrachydactyly condition that affected her right arm and fingers. What is the best advice I can give her when she grows up to make sure she doesn't feel left out and demotivated due to her difference and how can I inspire her to be proud of herself and her special hand?”

Nick paused before answering her question, looking straight into her eyes. “As a parent of a special child, the pain will never go away. You will worry about how she will live a normal life and who will want to marry her - these fears are very real.” He then talked about how a high percentage of couples with children with disabilities end up in divorce, acknowledging the fact that the road ahead was not going to be an easy one.

“But together with your husband, you can both choose to give your daughter a safe haven that she knows she can always return to and find love and acceptance no matter what she faces out there,” he said as Watie Aziz welled up in tears.

Datin Kathleen Chew presenting a Samsung 4G Chromebook as a token of appreciation to Nick

The evening closed with Datin Kathleen Chew presenting a token of appreciation to Nick, who left the audience with this final word: “No matter how many places I travel to, there is only one Nick Vujicic. You need to find more stories of your own local heros - it’s easy to report bad news but I challenge the Malaysian media to find more inspiring figures in your own country, because there are so many people out there who are making a difference.”

Earlier that day, Nick also spoke to an audience of 500 comprising students from underprivileged schools, Teach for Malaysia schools, 1BestariNet Champion Schools, and the Interact Clubs of Petaling Jaya. Read more about Inspiring Dreams: An Afternoon with Nick Vujicic.

What is Leaps of Knowledge?

Leaps of Knowledge is a series of talks, seminars, workshops and conferences presented by FrogAsia that aim to inspire and enlighten Malaysians with a focus on how education can be transformed through the use of technology and the Internet. The series will see the world’s leading educators, technologists, thinkers and personalities share their thoughts and ideas to foster public discourse on education in Malaysia, and to encourage students and teachers in Malaysia to make the most of the information age.

The first talk held on 30 August featured motivational speaker Nick Vujicic who was born without arms or legs. Nick shared his experiences in overcoming challenges and leveraging technology as a platform to spread positivity and encourage others. Stay tuned for the next Leaps of Knowledge session featuring Professor Sugata Mitra, conductor of the Hole in the Wall experiment, coming your way in December 2013.

Inspiring Dreams: An Afternoon with Nick Vujicic

In conjunction with the inaugural Leaps of Knowledge talk featuring world-renowned speaker Nick Vujicic, FrogAsia hosted 500 students and teachers at an exclusive, intimate afternoon event with the inspirational speaker. Held at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre and sponsored by the YTL Foundation, Inspiring Dreams: An Afternoon with Nick Vujicic was a great opportunity for students and teachers from schools all over the Klang Valley to be inspired by Nick’s life story and his example of rising above challenges.

Imagine living a life without limbs - that is the everyday reality for Nick Vujicic. Born in 1982 without arms and legs, Nick has challenged and overcome expectations of what he can and cannot do. Today, he’s an author, musician, actor, and his hobbies include fishing, painting and swimming. Nick’s story is a heartening one of what it means to believe in yourself and to have faith to keep pushing on.

Believing that Nick’s message was an important one to hear, especially for students who face many disadvantages and setbacks that they have little control over, we invited over 100 underprivileged students from the Dignity for Children Foundation, the Home of Peace, The Edge Foundation and SMPK Setapak, one of the only schools in Malaysia dedicated to education visually impaired students who are completely or partially blind. Over 90 students from high-need Teach For Malaysia schools were also invited to this special talk. The rest of the audience comprised of teachers and students from FrogAsia’s 1BestariNet Champion Schools, staff from Teach for Malaysia and students from the six Interact Clubs that make up the Interact Coordinating Committee Petaling Jaya (ICCPJ).

The audience were captivated by Nick as they watched him deliver his talk, which touched on many important issues that students could relate to, especially on the bullying that occurs in schools everywhere. Students were urged to treat each other with respect and love, to forgive those who have bullied them and to be an encouragement and a friend to their peers instead of being bullies.

After his talk, a few students were given the opportunity to tell Nick what they learnt that day.

Ishan of Catholic High School stood up to thank Nick, saying that he had learned how to overcome his fears and be more thankful of the people in his life, before choking up in tears. It was a moving moment when Nick invited Ishan down to the stage to give him a hug.

Nick and Ishan from Catholic High School

“I used to think of myself as a lazy person. Today I told myself, hey Aliza, if Nick can do it, so can you. I learned that in order to be successful, we must not stop at the first step. All the big things in life start at the first step,” said Aliza from the Dignity for Children Foundation.

FrogAsia also managed to speak to a few of the students after the event, to find out what they thought. Among them were the students from Home of Peace, Shammiah and Susanna.

“What impressed us most was that Nick told us to love our enemies - because when we went to public school we were bullied a lot,” said Shammiah and Susanna. “We were really angry and hated the people who bullied us but now we will try to love them because we don’t want to be like that.”

“I realised that in life, we should endure all the challenges that come to us,” said Nur Effah Syafiqah, a visually impaired student from SMPK Setapak. “Once we get through it, we will have a brighter future. Though I am visually impaired, it does not affect my future. I want to succeed in my studies.”

Nick closed by challenging the audience to take the initiative to show kindness, mutual respect and self-confidence to others and to be the change they wished to see.
